Can IP be bought and sold?

IP can be bought and sold like any other property. Patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets are all transferable assets: companies buy patent portfolios, brands change hands with businesses, and copyrights are assigned every day in client work.

The two transaction types matter more than the asset type. An assignment sells ownership outright and is permanent. A license sells permission to use while the owner keeps title, exclusive or not, limited by field, territory, or time. Licensing is renting; assignment is selling the house.

One formality is non-negotiable: copyright and patent assignments must be in writing to be effective. For freelancers this is daily reality, since every client deal is an IP transaction. The contract should say which rights transfer, when, upon payment is the standard trigger, and which stay with you.
