Is a handwritten contract legally binding?

A handwritten contract is legally binding if it contains the same elements as any other: offer, acceptance, consideration, capable parties, and signatures. US courts enforce agreements written on notebook paper; famous cases have enforced deals written on napkins.

Homemade contracts hold up in court for the same reason. The law tests substance, not production values.

The weak spots are practical rather than legal. Handwriting invites ambiguity, missing clauses, and arguments about what a scrawled term meant, and there is no clean copy for each party. A typed document that both sides sign, even a one-pager, removes those risks while keeping the simplicity. If you did the deal in handwriting, it likely binds; just consider re-papering anything ongoing.
