Is there a contract template in Word?

Word does have contract templates: open a new document and search the template gallery for contract or agreement and a handful of basic ones appear. Google Docs offers a thinner selection through its template gallery, and both work fine as a starting file.

The format question is a distraction, though. A contract is enforceable written in Word, Docs, PDF, or on paper; the best format is whichever produces a clean PDF for signing. What decides whether the document protects you is the clause list inside it.

Office-suite templates tend to be generic: fine skeletons, thin on payment terms, IP ownership, and termination. Fill one carefully and check what it never asked you about. What is missing hurts you later, not the file type.
