What is a freelancing contract?

A freelancing contract is the agreement between an independent professional and a client covering one engagement or an ongoing relationship: what work will be delivered, for what pay, by when, who owns the output, and how either side ends it.

How it works in practice: the freelancer usually sends the contract, the client signs, work proceeds against its milestones, and invoices reference its payment terms. In the US, the freelancer operates as a 1099 contractor rather than a W-2 employee, and the contract is what documents that independent status, for taxes and for classification rules alike.

It is the freelancer's main protection. Late payers, scope creep, and ownership arguments are all decided by what this one document says, which is a strong reason not to improvise it.
