What is a wedding contract?

A wedding contract is the agreement between a couple and a wedding vendor, a planner, photographer, florist, DJ, or venue, that locks in what will be delivered, for how much, on which date.

A basic wedding contract covers the event date and location, the exact services and hours, the total price with a deposit and payment schedule, and, most importantly, the cancellation and rescheduling terms. Weddings get postponed; the contract decides what happens to money when they do.

Vendor-side essentials that couples rarely think about: a meal and break clause for long events, weather contingencies, an image-use clause for photographers, and a force majeure provision. Since one wedding date can never be resold, deposits are typically non-refundable, and the contract should say so plainly.
